learn how to split, chisel & build a traditional sandstone cottage

Do you love stone?

Ye Old Stone School is a practical hands-on course in stone craft that teaches both manual skill and traditional masonry detail.

Tutor Damian Cudmore teaches the skills of stone handcraft towards a traditional style:-Hand-Splitting-Chiselling-Building with traditional cottage details

I’ve always been curious about stone masonry and how I might be able to incorporate some stone work around our home.
When I saw Damian’s workshop advertised I jumped at the opportunity.
I found Damian’s relaxed teaching style, his generous sharing of knowledge, the highly practical nature of his workshop just excellent.
I learnt so much over the four days and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
If you have a curiosity of stone masonry and want to learn some real skills treat yourself to one of Damian’s workshops, you won’t be disappointed.

from field to form

Ye Olde Stone School seeks experiences of space, enabled by carefully crafted walls, whilst optimising the experiences of makers.

Courses journey from boulders to buildings and clarify the extreme architectural satisfaction possible in spaces surrounded by hand-crafted stone walls.

They focus on three key things:skills – traditional stone handcraftartisanal logic – understanding the ‘why’ of historic architectural details, andhuman agency – there is not only the ‘thing’ to be made, there also is the maker to ‘become’.
